Integrative Medicine

Lakeview began offering a holistic approach to care through integrative medicine in 1998.  Integrative medicine offers nontraditional therapies as a way to relieve pain, reduce stress and enhance recovery.  With the support of our medical staff, Lakeview has effectively incorporated integrative therapies into our standards of care.  Patients may benefit from the healing effects of:

  • Aromatherapy through the use of pure essential oils to enhance pain relief, reduce stress and promote feelings of peace and relaxation.
  • Traditional Oriental Medicine, including acupressure from trained nursing staff, which can be effective in relieving tension, increasing circulation and reducing pain.
  • Acupuncture aids in strengthening the immune system and increasing the function and quality of lives.  A physician's order is necessary; available hospital-wide to patients.  To request a session, talk with your healthcare provider.
  • Massage therapy for patients and their families, offering pain relief and stress reduction.
  • Therapeutic relaxation, including soothing sounds, music and visuals of nature through the CARE channel.
  • Spirituality is enhanced through offering chaplaincy services, use of our chapel, meditation and prayer.  Lakeview Hospital also sponsors the St. Croix Valley Parish Nursing Program, which provides health and wellness programs and services to area churches.
  • Pet therapy for patients and their families is provided by a visiting certified therapy dog.  Studies have shown that pet therapy can be therapeutic in some situations.

Lakeview Hospital is proud to welcome Lora Matz, MS, LICSW, to its staff. Matz is the new Integrative Medicine Coordinator. “I am inspired by the impressive groundwork that has already been laid at Lakeview,” stated Matz. “I hope to help take it to the next level, offering more education to staff and the community in many areas of integrative healthcare.”

Matz is a national leader in the Integrative Medicine field. She served as the Associate Director and Clinical Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine with Dr. James Gordon, Chairman of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and continues to serve as a senior faculty member for the Center. She is a co-founder of Transformative Practices in the Twin Cities. She also teaches at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing. She has a background in both pediatric and adult healthcare, including working as a therapist in hospital settings. “I am excited to help expand the program of excellence that already exists at Lakeview,” Matz said.

Integrative medicine combines conventional medicine with complementary therapies or medicine for which there is some evidence of safety and effectiveness. Integrative medicine therapies can have a powerful effect on a person’s emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health. Techniques currently in practice at Lakeview include therapeutic relaxation, visual imagery, aromatherapy, acupressure, acupuncture, massage therapy and pet therapy. “I hope to get more integrative approaches in place in the outpatient setting as well,” Matz continued. “Well researched, scientifically based complementary treatments have been shown to make an enormous difference in all areas of people’s lives when integrated into existing treatment approaches.”
