National Quality Indicators

Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP)
The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a national partnership of organizations committed to improving the safet of surgical care through the reduction of post-operative complications. Surgical complications can take a measurable toll on a patient's health and safety, extending treatment and leading to longer hospital stays. The Surgical Care Improvement Project or SCIP (pronounced "skip") is designed to provide hospitals, physicians, nurses and other caregivers with effective strategies to reduce four common surgical complications - surgical wound infections, blood clots, perioperative heart attack, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. The strategies are based on the best available science and will be refined and improved as new scientific information becomes available.

Surgical Infection Prevention:
Antibiotic Given 1 Hour Prior to Incision 92% 85%
Antibiotics Stopped Within 24 Hours After Surgery     94% 86%

Pneumonia
Pneumonia accounts for nearly 600,000 Medicare patient hospitalizations each year. The incidence of pneumonia increases with age, and more than 90 percent of deaths for people age 65 years and older are due to this condition. Pneumococcal and influenza vaccines continue to be underused in the inpatient setting. Only 16.5 percent of patients receive pneumococcal immunizations before discharge and only 13.8 percent receive influence immunizations.

Cardiovascular Care (Heart Failure and AMI)
Over 300,000 Medicare patients are hospitalized for heart attack (acut myocardial infarction or AMI) each year. Many do not receive important therapies that are known to be beneficial. Heart failure accounts for more than 700,000 hospitalizations among Medicare beneficiaries every year and is associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Lakeview Health is engaged in quality improvement in each of these areas of cardiovascular care. Our work in the area of AMI focused on strengthening appropriate processes of assessment, treatment and follow-up care (including smoking cessation counseling) to improve patient outcomes. We work to improve evaluation of left ventricular function, appropriate use of medication in patients hospitalized with heart failure, and patient and family education.
