Communication is Very Important
A pager has been assigned to the contact person. The pager will operate from anywhere within the hospital. Please do not put pagers in a purse or bag. The pager will activate throughout the day alerting the contact person to check in at the Surgery Reception Desk for a message. The contact person will be notified:

Pain and Comfort - Preparing for Your Surgery
The following information has been developed to help you and your family prepare for your surgery and recovery. Our goal is to control your pain and enhance your comfort before and after surgery.

We understand that surgery can be a time of question and concern. We want you to know that we are available and that we hope to make your experience here as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

Your Rights and Responsibilities

1. You have the right

  • to participate actively in decisions about how to manage your pain.
  • to have your pain thoroughly assessed.
  • to have your pain promptly treated.
  • to have your treatment adjusted if your pain has not eased.

2. You have the responsibility

  • to ask questions regarding pain and pain management.
  • to discuss pain relief options and comfort measures with physicians and nurses.
  • to ask for pain relief when pain first begins.
  • to help the physician and nurse assess your pain.
  • to report if the pain is not relieved.
  • to express any concerns related to taking pain medication.

Prior to surgery it is important to discuss the following information with your nurse and physician.

  • All medications you are currently taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
  • Allergies and sensitivities you may have to medication, food and the environment and the reaction (nausea, hives, difficulty breathing, etc.).
  • Comfort measures available to you, such as listening to music, warm blankets, reclined position, etc.
  • Measurement of pain intensity using the Analog or Faces Scale.
  • Analog Scale - you will be asked to rate the intensity of your pain on a scale of 0 to 10 (zero = no pain, 5 = distressing pain, 10 = unbearable pain).
  • Faces Scale - you will be asked to rate the intensity of your pain using pictures of a happy face (no pain) to a sad face (hurts worst).

Pain medication will be given depending on your need and physician orders.

  • Intravenous (IV) medicine - IV pain medication may be given after surgery while you are in the recovery room.
  • Pain pills - Pain pills may be given after surgery while you are in the Same Day Surgery area.
  • Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) - Pain medications may be given through an IV by a special pump. The pump is programmed to deliver a continuous amount of pain medication and/or deliver a preset amount of pain medication when you push the button or a combination of a continuous amount and a preset amount when you push the button. The PCA will be initiated in the Recovery Room and continue until you are able to take pain pills. No one else is to push the button for you!
